Getting Rich from the Most Expensive Ski Slope in History

The Accused

Akhmed Bilalov, VP of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The Crime

Akhmed Bilalov was fired as VP of the Russian Olympic Committee and deputy prime minister in charge of Olympic preparations – as a result of a two year delay in completing the ski slope and increase in cost from $40M to $265M. "The police subsequently opened a criminal case against him for allegedly abusing his position as head of a state-owned company. Among other acts of fraud, he was accused of using state money to pay nearly $100,000 for luxury travel to London during the 2012 Summer Olympics."

All this may explain why the Sochi Olympics, as a whole, is costing 3x the amount it costs to explore Mars.

Real Punishment

Bilalov was fired from his job after President Putin detoured the ski slope and was displeased after multiple issues, including a significant increase in cost.

The law in our hands

We find it amusing that Russian President Vladmir Putin was outraged over the cost of the ski slopes, given that Putin has encouraged a widely corrupt oligarchy for many years. Perhaps what Mr. Putin meant was that this stealing was not authorized stealing? Or perhaps Mr. Putin didn’t get his cut?
